Bio

FERNANDO G. ALBERTI is Professor of Business Strategy at LIUC - Cattaneo University, where he directs the Research Centre on Entrepreneurship and Competitiveness and the Master's degree programme in Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He is an Institutes Council Leader and Affiliate Faculty member at the Institute of Strategy and Competitiveness directed by Prof. M.E. Porter at Harvard Business School, where he coordinates the activities of the centres and institutes belonging to the Microeconomics of Competitiveness network. PhD in Small Business Economics, he studied at the Jönköping International Business School and the London School of Economics and Political Sciences.

He has taught at many universities in Italy and abroad and is contract professor of Economics and Management of Networks and Small Enterprises at the University of Milan Bicocca.

His areas of expertise include corporate strategy, entrepreneurship, competitiveness of companies, clusters and territories. He is also an expert in strategy and governance of family businesses, with particular reference to generational succession processes, the definition of family agreements and pacts and the establishment and management of family councils, strategic committees and boards of directors. On these issues, he chairs the only national commission set up at the Busto Arsizio Order of Chartered Accountants and Accounting Experts, dedicated to advising family businesses, and was for several years family business strategist at Starfin SA, the family office of a well-known Italian entrepreneurial family, advising on family strategy and governance for a number of ultra-high-net-worth entrepreneurs.

He has participated in and directed numerous strategic advisory and training projects for leading Italian and foreign family businesses (Alessi, Rizoma, Geox, Diesel, Illy, Riso Gallo, Yomo, Tenacta, Creta Farm, IpaSud (Despar), Rosenthal-Sambonet, Phonetica, Alfredo Grassi, Malo, D'Addario, Brioni, Caruso, Bobst, Plat.one, Toni&Guy, etc.), international groups (Deloitte, Philip Morris, McDonalds, Hyperion, Adidas, IKEA, Unicredit, etc.) and institutions (Confindustria Lombardia, CNA, Italian Red Cross, Regione Lombardia, etc.).

He carries out research and advisory activities on competitiveness and governance for districts and clusters and has directed the drafting of the strategic plan for the Lombardy Energy Cleantech Cluster, the Lombardy Aerospace Cluster and the Confindustria Lombardia strategic plan called #Lombardia2030. He was the director of the Como Textile District Observatory and is a permanent guest on the Board of Directors of the Lombardy Energy Cleantech Cluster.

He was Industrial Strategist for the World Bank and UNIDO, the UN economic development agency, on competitiveness plans for nations and clusters.

A referee for banks, public institutions and incubators in the evaluation of entrepreneurial projects, he followed the public calls Start-up and Re-start, ERGON, MIXTAL, SATURNO and MINERVA.

He sits on the editorial board of international scientific journals such as: Competitiveness Review, International Journal of Competitiveness, International Journal of Technology Intelligence and Planning and International Journal of Comparative Management.

An independent board member for various family-owned companies in manufacturing and services in Italy and abroad, he sits on the scientific committees of the CFMT (Centro di Formazione Management del Terziario), the Alessandro Volta Foundation, the Lab-Centre for Competitiveness of the Grenoble Ecole de Management, the Center for Competitiveness of the University of Freiburg, the Netherlands Center for Competitiveness, the Center for Governance and Competitiveness of the Ecole des Pontes in Paris and the Fórum de Inovação, Fundação Getulio Vargas in Brazil.

He chairs Strategique, a Harvard-based international think-tank.
